An EA is carried out as the project involves rural setting. An Environmental Management Framework (EMF) will be prepared for the project. A list of eligible activities has been pre-identified, including erosion control works, planting of windbreaks, reforestation with native species, wetlands recuperation and conservation, and others. The average size of the on-farm interventions would be less than 10 ha, depending on the site. These activities are small-scale and any potential impacts can be readily mitigated through measures detailed in the EMF and will be consider both the protection of the natural environment as well as human health and safety. The measures will be consistent with World Bank policy and national law, including any licensing measures applicable at national and local level. Impacts on natural habitats are expected to be positive by virtue of the project objective and design. A primary focus involves the protection and restoration of the natural landscape, decreased land degradation, and improved protection of biodiversity in priority ecosystems of Chile. The EMF will include a screening mechanism for the use of exotics species to ensure that they are only used when required and do not replace native vegetation or impact biodiversity. In all cases, native species will be favored for the project development. Forest ecosystems are expected to be positively impacted by the project. Sustainable forest management on small scale with communities or small producers are the expected activities to be supported under the project. Only activities in native forests which promote their health, regeneration and recuperation will be carried out. No commercial harvesting will be carried out or financed. No industrial-scale planting will take place. Best practices will be employed in all forestry activities consistent with the policy and with national legislation.
